How to Deploy AI Agent Tools as HTTP Functions
AI agents become useful when they can call tools. A tool might search a database, create a support ticket, send a Slack message, check inventory, or start a background job.
The cleanest way to expose many of these tools is as HTTP functions.
An HTTP function gives the agent a stable contract:

Each tool receives JSON, validates it, performs one controlled action, and returns JSON. This pattern is simple, portable, and easy to debug.
Why HTTP works well for agent tools
HTTP is a good boundary between the model and your systems.
The model does not need direct access to your database. It does not need your private API keys. It does not need to know how your billing system works. It only needs to know that a tool exists, what input it expects, and what output it returns.
The backend function owns the dangerous parts:
- authentication;
- input validation;
- secrets;
- business rules;
- retries;
- rate limits;
- logging;
- external API calls.
This keeps the agent flexible while preserving control.
Step 1: define the tool contract
Start with the smallest possible contract.

Step 2: validate input
Never trust tool input just because it came from an agent.
The model may produce malformed JSON, omit required fields, or request an action outside the expected scope. Your function should validate everything.

- field types are correct;
- string lengths are reasonable;
- IDs match expected format;
- requested action is allowed;
- user or tenant context is valid.

Step 3: keep secrets on the backend
A tool function may need API keys for Stripe, GitHub, Slack, OpenAI, a database, or an internal service. These should live in environment variables or a secrets system.
The agent should never receive raw credentials.
Instead, the function uses secrets internally:
agent → tool function → external API
The model sees the result, not the credential.
Step 4: add authentication
Tool endpoints should not be open unless they are intentionally public.
Common options include:
- API key authentication;
- bearer tokens;
- signed requests;
- internal-only routes;
- tenant-scoped credentials.
For AI agents, tenant context is especially important. A tool call for one customer should not access data from another customer.
Step 5: make tool output predictable
Do not return random text if the caller expects structured data. Return a stable JSON shape.

Step 6: decide when to use background jobs
Some tools should respond directly. Others should start a job.

Step 7: log every tool call
When something goes wrong, you need to know:
- which tool was called;
- what input was passed;
- who called it;
- how long it ran;
- which external API failed;

Logs should avoid sensitive data, but they should be detailed enough to debug the workflow.
